Act Wild! For Apes

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is committed to the conservation of wildlife and wild places, including our closest living relatives—the apes.

The Concern: Ape populations are rapidly declining due to habitat destruction and the illegal hunting and selling of apes for food, known as the bushmeat trade.

What’s a Zoo to Do? The Zoo supports the Mbeli Bai gorilla field study and the Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary, is a member of the Bushmeat Crisis Task Force, and participates in Species Survival Plans for the bonobo, gorilla, orangutan, and gibbon.
